Our vision
At St Hilary, we believe that Computing gives children the opportunity to explore and experience the wider world around them, widening and deepening their essential knowledge and skills. Ensuring that children become computer literate ensures that they can access the curriculum as fully and safely as possible and also provides a foundation for life-long learning. We teach computing using Teach Computing which provides a progressive scheme ensuring that knowledge and skills are built progressively term on term and year on year. Internet safety is a key part of our curriculum to ensure that all children are aware of how to keep themselves and others safe online and how they can report anything that they are concerned about. Our school is equipped with 1:1 iPads in Years 2-6 and 1:2 iPads in Reception-Year 1 for whole class computing teaching and learning as well as interactive screens in each classroom throughout the school.
From The National Curriculum in England – framework document 2013 Purpose of study
“A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.”
