Welcome to Class 5

A very warm welcome to Class 5!

Teacher: Miss Burman

Teaching Assistant: Ms Kerry Pascoe

This terms topic is:  'To the Moon and Back'

Children will be travelling to the moon and space, New Zealand, London and back home to explore different communities and ways of living.

Our key question is: Are we really miles apart?

Check out our curriculum overview to find out what exciting learning is to be had in class 5 this Spring term!

Timetable information

Mondays: Spelling test

Wednesdays: During show and tell children are free to share ideas, belongings and hobbies with the class. Children will also be spending the afternoon focusing on music with Mrs Eddy.

Thursdays: We will spend the start of the day watching Newsround and discussing current affairs. Due to the class teacher being out of class on a Friday morning for lesson planning, class 5 will be completing their Big Write (every two weeks) on a Thursday morning. Talk homework to prepare for Big Write will be provided on a Wednesday.

Our final activity every Friday is 'Compliments'. During 'compliments' one child is selected at random to receive compliments from his'her peers, myself as class teacher and from themselves. This is our time to celebrate our individuality and achievements.

Children will be given new spellings every Monday in class, children will have all week to practise these ready for a spelling test the following Monday.

Spelling sentences are weekly homework whereby children must put their weeks spellings into sentences. Children are encouraged to explore varied sentence structures using accurate punctuation and high level vocabulary. These must be completed at home, in blue books (if children wish to type these up please can they be slotted into blue books to keep them together) and bought back to school on the Friday. They will be peer marked and reviewed on the Friday.

Children will be completing TT Rock stars and Mathletics on a weekly rotation. During Mathletics week, you will find new challenges set by the teacher. New tasks should be completed over a two week period. Tasks will be set to further develop and/or consolidate previous learning.

Please note, if homework cannot be completed for any reason please write a note in your child’s planner advising the class teacher. If children are struggling for internet access they are more than welcome to use our class I-pads in school to compete tasks.

EVERY OTHER WEDNESDAY - they will be asked to complete a 'talk homework' to plan a piece of writing for 'Big Writing' in class on the Thursday.

We do not recommend that children spend any longer than 30 minutes on homework even if it means leaving work unfinished. Please use the homework diaries to let us know if your child has had difficulties as we will support them with the task during the school day- it is highly likely that some other children will be in the same boat!

Spellings are given half termly on the Spellings sheets (attached below) and tested on Mondays.

We also recommend that pupils read every day. Please could a record of this be kept in their school planner. Keeping a record allows children to work toward achieving their karate reading bands. Children will be selecting an accelerated reader book from the school library, if children have books they are eager to read from home, they can check to see if the book is part of the accelerated reader scheme and bring this into school as their school reading book also.

Reading for pleasure makes students more articulate, develops higher order reasoning, and promotes critical thinking. In class 5 we celebrate the art of reading and the creative thinking opportunities reading brings.

Children may be provided additional homework activities throughout the week in order to consolidate the weeks learning.

Thank you for your cooperation.
